It’s 2014 so when you see Iggy Azalea and Pharrell as contributors for a new single, you only assume it’s aimed for the mainstream. Fortunately, this is Jennifer Hudson’s single so it’s more on the fresh end of the spectrum than cookie cutter.
Pharrell first establishes the tone with a funky, edgy and not happy-go-lucky beat. Note the subtleties throughout the transitions and Iggy’s guest verse. Before we get there, J-Hud’s piercing vocals give this song a resonating impact and thankfully she stays true to a lyrical story. Iggy puts down a fast flow, which is what I was hoping for because if she slowed it down to a talking tone than it woulda killed this single for me. I feel like J-Hud can carry this one by her lonesome, but Iggy’s presence should raise “He Ain’t Going Nowhere” upwards on the charts. I’m cool with it because the single doesn’t try to do that, though it’s certainly crossing over. Plus, this Pharrell production is a hot one that I hope other artists remix. At this point, hear for yourselves below… off Jennifer Hudson’s upcoming album, JHUD — out next Tuesday the 23rd.
