Today is the start of this year’s biggest global sporting event the World Cup! And to coincide with the celebration, the soccer goals, and then the soccer goal celebration, I had to highlight the beautiful World Cup Stadium Architecture that will be hosting the matches in Brazil for the next month.
Browse the in-depth gallery above via ArchDigest that is actually in order of my favorite stadiums. I love the newly renovated Estádio Maracanã, one of the world’s most legendary stadiums that housed previous World Cups and all of Brazil’s biggest soccer stars. The context of the stadium as a whole is the beginning of many breathtaking aerial views in the gallery and what’s sure to be on TV. Given the history and the outside aesthetic, I am immediately attracted to this structure, with the interior view magnificent as well. For further reading, ArchDaily wrote an in-depth piece on the unique roof structure.
Other notable favorites: the outside and plaza of the Arena da Amazônia, the inviting facade of the Arena Fonte Nova, and the interior of the Arena de São Paulo. All of the stadiums were either built from scratch (bringing upon controversy for its completion by today) or newly renovated within the past 3 years! Modern stadium architecture at its best.
And hey, how about a little music to go along with the start of the World Cup? J-Lo, Pitbull, and Claudia Leitte performed the theme song “We Are One” to kick off game 1 (no pun intended) below and in the previous post, soccer fans RDGLDGRN dropped a free release with drums by Dave Grohl called “Robots”.
