Drake brings out Nicki Minaj at Coachella

Closing out Coachella last night, Drake promised a better surprise guest than Madonna in his recent profile by Ernest Baker and to, probably not as much of a surprise, he brought out Nicki Minaj for their hit “Truffle Butter”. A couple IGs are below as it looks like Drake’s redemptive performance was not streamed in full (like last week’s).

Also in attendance in the artist VIP area was none other than Kanye West who was gettin hype to one of many bangers by Drake.

This, after another surprise appearance at the festival earlier in the day when he came up on stage with Stromae. If you recall, ‘Ye hopped on the remix to the catchy dance hit “Alors On Dance” in 2010. Whoo, that burned up my rotation back then. I gotchu below.

Drake has 2 songs for his upcoming album

The topic of our talk switches to Drake’s upcoming fourth album. He only has two songs finished that he likes. One is a collaboration with Beyoncé that he recorded a while ago. The other is a song that he expects to inspire a paradigm shift. His days of releasing lay-up bangers that everyone loves right away are over. For now.

Four-Pins profile by Ernest Baker

Up above is the musical news revealed in a fascinating new profile following Drake around during Coachella weekend by Ernest Baker for Four-Pins. Sure, it’s not much, but it also gives us a glimpse at how far along Drake is for Views From The 6 and just as importantly, the mindset approaching the album, stressing a new sound. I agree that’s where Drizzy has to take it with this next one.

Amongst the other great details with Drake that weekend was his awareness a couple days later that the Coachella performance received negative reviews and that he’ll have a surprise guest that’s even better next weekend. I hope so because we all remember last weekend as Madonna’s make out. In fact, here’s a direct quote from Drake on the performance:

I took an L for the first time. I just have to reassess what went wrong with my judgment.

Wow. More real gems and just a picture of his real personality are scattered throughout the profile, which is definitely a must-read for Drake fans.

In Drake merchandise news, he surprise dropped the long-awaited OVO Jordans last night at the OVO Pop-Up Shop in L.A. (cold) and released an official OVO Playoff tee with his hometown Raptors in advance of tomorrow’s first round game. All images below. Drake Full Coachella Set

Overall, Drake brought the energy and I was particularly impressed at how he sounded identical to his studio recordings. There were many live version flow switches that were subtle details to appreciate too. The highlights of Drake’s set were the first few songs up to “Headlines” as he played to the crowd’s initial energy. But the crowd kind of went dead afterwards, maybe moreso because this was about hour 12 of the day after Friday and Saturday too.

The deadest moment from the crowd was when Madonna came out as Drake’s special guest (after he performed “Madonna”, naturally). After all, she performed a couple of songs that were older than the median age of the crowd, so many didn’t get the “Human Nature” references. It was at a lowpoint when Madonna tried to get a rise from the crowd 3 times in a row but got very small cheers so she tried to get a rise out of Drake (ayo!) Happy Monday, east coasters.

The memes and jokes will be bountiful. So thanks for that, Drake?

Anywho, the last couple highlights of the set was the “10 Bands” x “Energy” x “Know Yourself” combo. I love the Woes drop and the front portion of the crowd appropriately got hype for that. That moment would be the main reason I’d go see Drake on tour. Felt that energy across the stream, though I know it can be even crazier.

Drake ended on “Started”, followed by more of “Legend” (what he started with, no pun intended). It was well-executed as the cameras panned out to reveal more of the jungle set that we didn’t get to totally see in the stream for the hour before. All in all, I can’t knock Drake himself for the effort, but I couldn’t help but notice flaws (or different preferences) of song order or more pyro, lights, and/or lasers (the latter 2 were non existent.) Drake was too much of a one-man show so some more theatrics would have helped the performance. The multiple rectangle screens throughout were tight, but too similar to Kanye’s recent shows also. The Weeknd Full Coachella Set

Since 2011, we have seen The Weeknd premiere as a dark, mysterious R&B singer from Toronto, with no photos to his name for months, to 2015 and a headlining set at Coachella.

His 2015 has already been off to a great start with the success of top 10 hit “Earned It” and as festival season truly kicks off this weekend in Cali, he has earned the prestige of headlining a night on the first weekend (no pun intended.)

The growth has been magnificent to see, as well as the Kiss Land Tour live so I know his set at Coachella was dope too. Thanks to the interwebs, we can watch the entire full Coachella set below and see him run through singles from all across his library. Billboard also called it a “breakthrough performance.” So with that, enjoy below!

This is the greatest night of my whole life. Nothing is better than this moment right here.
