Childish Gambino “Telegraph Ave”

Gambino‘s not stopping with the surprise new releases. Last week it was the mixtape/EP, S T N  M T N / Kauai; this week it’s a music video for Because The Internet’s “Telegraph Ave (“Oakland” by Lloyd)”. For the video, Gambino and co-star, always-rumored bae Jhene Aiko take to Kauai and get all coupled up. It’s honestly hard not to feel their chemistry. I mean look at them…

That said, it’s a good thing that Jhene has been subtlety public with her boyfriend Dot Da Genius, because no one would believe her if the mystery was still there after seeing this video. And seeing this video is well worth it until the very end… don’t you dare press play and just listen to the song (though I’m sure the stunning Ms. Aiko won’t let you leave anyway… :))

*Tibs Fav. on the song (which I now have a greater appreciation for… especially lyrically) and the visuals

A couple of cool bonus Gambino tidbits today too… 1. Donald Glover has a new movie role. The Wrap is reporting that Glover will join a star-studded cast in the new Ridley Scott movie titled ‘The Martian’. Said star-studded cast includes Matt Damon, Jessica Chastain, Kristen Wiig, Kate Mara, Michael Pena and Jeff Daniels, with Damon leading “as an astronaut who becomes stranded on Mars and must figure out how to survive long enough to return home to Earth.” That actually sounds pretty cool, with the great cast even before Glover’s addition to boot.

Secondly, Gambino linked up with Ubisoft to provide “Crawl” as the official song for the trailer to Far Cry 4, a creepy violent game seen below. Gambino brings it in with why he chose the song in a brief intro too.

Donald Glover as Spider-Man

Remember the social media campaign to get Donald Glover as the new Spider-Man on the big screen? While the role eventually went to Andrew Garfield, the #donald4spiderman campaign in 2010 inspired writer Brian Michael Bendis to eventually cast Glover as the voice of Miles Morales, the 13-year old Spider-Man in Disney XD’s “Ultimate Spider-Man: Web-Warriors” animated series. Here is Glover’s debut below when Morales meets Peter Parker. Pretty sweet.

Says Glover:

I just tried to be as me as possible, because you’re always just going to bring it back to yourself when you watch the show.

Gambino Plays with Fire on Lolla Day 3

Where do I even begin.  I’ve covered Gambino everytime he has been in Chicago these past two years. If that’s not Gambino Girl status, then I don’t what is.

I think one of the hardest things as an artist must be catering to a music festival crowd. Sound gets lost, there’s rain, exhausted kids, and people that didn’t buy tickets to go to your show in particular. Somehow, Gambino still manages to just kill it. He played and equal balance of old hits and new hits, and of course everything in between.

I had previously caught his show in SXSW (Austin) and in Chicago back in March and Gambino’s set kept the energy flowing throughout and had a completely different feel each time.  Gambino at the Woodies/SXSW was a little weird and more experimental. I think he was having fun messing with the crowd, playing his latest album Because The Internet, and wearing his trademark homeless person looking threads. Last March at the Vic in Chicago, he was intuitive, deep, and serious.

Revving up the beginning of the show, we hear the slow climax of “I. Crawl” as the rest of Lolla’s concert goings are pouring in after hiding from the rain .  Chicago loves our hip hop so the mastermind dedicated something extra special us – extra deep bass on his tracks.  Rapping his way through some of his toughest lyrics as his shorts could barely keep up with him.  (The waistband broke and were slowing working their way off).

Of course, there was also his actual physical set that was by far the most creative our team saw all weekend.  It was something along the lines of Salvador Dali graphics and towards the last third of his set, included some surprise pyrotechnics.  To top things off, he finished the show with a complete freestyle encore (heard in full below — with lyrics.)

Gambino’s always changing and I can’t wait to see what he does next.

Community x Childish Gambino “Sweatpants”

Don’t be mad cause I’m doin’ me better than you’re doin’ you.

Tonight is a sad night. Why? Because it’s Donald Glover’s last episode on Community. 😦

The talented comedian and actor that you may know as Childish Gambino has found a cult following in his role as Troy Barnes during the past 5 years (and really, the entire cast and show has such a dedicated fanbase that I’m proud to be a part of). We had known Glover was only going to appear in the new season’s first few episodes and tonight’s all-new one is being promoted as the Troy Barnes farewell.

To appropriately commemorate the occasion, this new mix video (that went viral on Reddit, h/t to the homie Brugge once again) blends odd, lovable scenes of Troy and the Community cast with Childish Gambino’s “Sweatpants”. As the video gets going, you’ll see just how many weird moments match up perfectly with some of the weird references and lyrics from Gambino. It’s so enjoyably synched that I’m going to watch it again and run back “Sweatpants” even more with Because The Internet still steady in my rotation.

I’ll be tuned in tonight. Community won’t be the same, but the entire ensemble is great and the writers are so clever that we’ll still be in good hands. Endings are assuredly sad, but there’s always the good that comes with it. Glover is rising as Childish Gambino, and is slated to produce his own show on FX. No doubt the future is bright for Donald! …Cool cool cool.
