Gemstones ‘Blind Elephant’ (Cover + Release Date)

With every new release, Gemstones impresses across the board. That’s rapping, singing, and conceptually and I don’t doubt the long-awaited Blind Elephant will deliver as well. We’ll find out for ourselves come April 7th when the album will be available everywhere music is sold via Xist Music. Diggin’ the artwork that drives home the album title too.

BONUS: Hit this new song below which features Gemstones rapping and is an all-new release that deserves a spot in your rotation.

Gemstones “Circles”

My reason for writing “Circles” was to bring more awareness of black on black crime in our communities. Knowing I can’t change the world but if I reach one my job is done.

– Gemstones

Gemstones is back! Here’s the first release of new music since he went into the studio for his Xist Music debut album and he makes a statement with “Circles”. As he says above, he tackles black on black crime with the song and video, and while we’ve certainly seen a few Chicago artists take their hand at the topic lately, Gem takes it to another level.

To describe how would spoil the video, which takes a turn about halfway through. In usual Gemstones fashion, it takes just one listen to be engaged into his fast-pace storytelling and follow along as things escalate after the set-up. Job well done across the board and a great first preview of Blind Elephant, set for a February 24th, 2015 release!

Monday Roundup

You may have noticed the site has been stagnant for the last couple of days. We were in the midst of some site updates and couldn’t update you on the latest and greatest during the start of this second week of September. Never fear, here’s your rundown of just Monday’s new content below (Tuesday is linked below too.)

My favorite segment of the 3 — Gambino rocks a smooth freestyle over HS87’s buzzing summer single and confirms that Chance collab EP in the process. Jhene Aiko talks about Gambino himself amongst other topics including her debut album, Souled Out, (out now!). And finally, Raury does something different after a nearly 20 minute sit down with Hot 97 — an acoustic cover of Kanye’s “Blood on the Leaves”, in which he also adds a new verse of his own. Fresh. And it would only sound better in the studio, methinks.

Raury covers “Blood On The Leaves”, adds new verse, talks with Ebro In The Morning

**Note: I would also include the new Kanye West verse on the 1:30 preview of Theophilus London “Can’t Stop”, but the audio has been removed. You’ll hear it soon enough though — ‘Ye is exec. producing Theophilus London’s upcoming album, Vibes.

Selah the Corner f/ Gemstones & Redd Lettaz “Quarter Quell”

This song has everything. “Quarter Quell” is a new collab from Selah The Corner featuring one of my favorite artists (of any artists) Gemstones and Redd Lettaz. You have Mpax behind the boards, first delivering a momentous and menacing production that makes me feel like I’m going to war. And in a variety of ways, that’s part of the message here.

You see, Mpax also samples a chilling female PA announcement voice that delivers Hunger Games style intros to each verse and adds to the monumental mood. Gemstones delivers not 1, but 2 verses about, well, the real-life Hunger Games he sees — the survival of the fittest world while also professing faith in “Jesus is the only way to heaven.” The way he kicks off that first verse though is delivered with such a smooth flow given the intricate diction he chose. Mad impressive.

The third verse belongs to Redd Lettaz, who, from Chicago as well, maintains the song’s edge and puts down some thought-provoking lyricism too. As much as I’m familiar with Gemstones’ work (he’s why I tuned in, after all), I vibe with Redd Lettaz’ contribution too and I wouldn’t be on my 3rd listen already if he didn’t bring it too. I could keep going, but at this point you have to press play and download for free.

The one critique I have on the record is that I wish the lady PA announcer came back for some sort of fade out — it just kind of ends with Redd Lettaz last few bars. Though I should also note that I have the perfect song to listen to right after “Quarter Quell”, and it came on naturally in the shuffle right after — Muse’s “The 2nd Law: Isolated System”, a.k.a. the intro track to Brad Pitt’s World War Z movie. It’s on the same vibe as “Quarter Quell” above.

Titan Duce “Fresh” f/ Gemstones

Gemstones, One of Chicago’s more lyrically talented MC’s kills it on this new joint from Titan Duce entitled, “Fresh.” A track coming off TD’s debut project, ‘The Long Road To Salvation,’ dropping September 17th. Sounds like Gem’s been sharpening up the skills.

Fresh off the heels of his debut video “Long Road” Titan returns with Gemstones for “Fresh”. The collab is the second single and final release before Titan reveals his debut project “The Long Road To Salvation” September 17th. Stay tuned to TitanDuce.com
