Tonight’s Stand Up To Cancer benefit concert and event took center stage during primetime as hosts Gwyneth Paltrow and Joel Gallen brought the event live across many major networks. They were joined by other celebrities like Halle Berry, Jennifer Aniston, Pierce Brosnan, Reese Witherspoon, Ben Stiller, and Will Ferrell.
They were also joined by Chicago’s own: Lupe Fiasco, Jennifer Hudson, and Common. In fact, the three brought the event to a close with a fitting performance of “Remission” — the new remix of Lupe’s single that debuted last week. It was the first time, and hopefully not the last, that all three Chicago stars shared the stage, with the shared focus of beating cancer in the song, the performance, and the night overall bringing everyone together. Lupe & Common were especially amped, bringing the energy and bouncing around the stage while pronouncing each word flawlessly. Watch down under, as it looks like we’ll see this again in Chicago to close out the AAHH! Fest as J-Hud was newly added today.
Down below, Ariana Grande also performed — here’s the pop star with “My Everything”.
Lupe had hinted at it shortly after his “Mission” dropped in May — a Re-Mission — the clever double meaning with remix and puttin’ the cancer in remission, which if you recall, is what Lupe’s single is all about. Now with the “ReMission” he teams up with two of Chicago’s biggest stars in Common & Jennifer Hudson. Could this be any more of a perfect mix?
Lupe’s original first verse stands with Jennifer Hudson taking care of background vocals, the hook, and an extended bridge of her own. Before that part though is Common’s second verse that builds off the motivating energy of Lupe’s verse. It’s a seamless transition between artists that wouldn’t feel right if it didn’t close with Lupe’s original 3rd verse, a lil bit of Charlie Wilson, and then J-Hud for the grand finale. The video is simply a series of clips of all 3 in the studio and while it’s cool to see them talk and vibe out, it’s definitely more about the song.
The original quickly became a big #StandUpToCancer anthem that landed Lupe a one-on-one with Katie Couric and resonated with anyone who has dealt with or a close loved one dealt with cancer. I think anyone can appreciate that aim and the subsequent results, even if it’s not your infectious, repeat single. Now I’m glad to see it bigger with 3x the star power and a performance lined up for the Stand Up To Cancer show on September 5th (@ 8pm/7c).
In fact, “ReMission” is built for the live stage since the lighters and cell phones are called for. Don’t you think that would be the fitting way to close AAHH! Fest at Union Park in our hometown in a few weeks too? *wishful predicting*

J-Hud & Kellz?!
Yup, it’s happening. The Chi’s two biggest singers together is really all I need to say. On J-Hud’s new single too is a bonus, speaking to the push “It’s Your World” is about to get. Hudson premiered it on last night’s BET Awards and the single can be heard here:
R. Kelly guests with a verse and wrote the record with Hudson, with legendary house DJ Terry Hunter providing the uptempo beat. In fact, it has a modern, 80s mix feel to the song which is instantly appealing. This one was a great listen all the way through to the end when Kellz and J-Hud show off their range, belting and holding a note that is each equally impressive. No bad things to say about this one. Hopefully it hits the mainstream and contemporary audiences and is not held back by not being that “sound”, ya know?
A quick rundown of the 2014 BET Awards Performances, in case you missed it. We had Beyonce & Jay Z sending in a video of “Partition” to close the show (hah! kinda funny), Nicki Minaj, Lil Wayne performing his new single “Krazy”, John Legend & Jhene Aiko together (!), Trey Songz & August Alsina squashing their beef, Chris Brown back, Jennifer Hudson, Usher, Robin Thicke, T.I. & Iggy Azalea, Pharrell, and more. And start it all off with how the show did: host Chris Rock‘s hilarious opening monologue as he takes fun jabs at Solange & Jay Z, Oprah, Rick Ross, Kevin Hart, and Donald Sterling.
Plus, some fun GIFs, MEMEs, and the like below too!
