Steve Aoki f/ Linkin Park “Darker Than Blood”

Steve Aoki & Linkin Park’s collab from earlier this year still reigns as a *Tibs Fav. of 2015 for me. I thought Chester really sounded at home on the futuristic, uptempo production and it carries over to the all-new futuristic (2052, to be exact) visual above.

Aoki and Mike Shinoda try and create a cure for a virus that’s plaguing the globe in 2052 and the video follows that pursuit and test on a young patient. The tech looks the part too and as a result, the video is aesthetically beautiful on top of creating new substance for the song. Needless to say, press play above.

BONUS: Time has a nice write-up on Linkin Park’s newest venture — launching their own venture capital firm: Machine Shop. A quick read and it’s great to see the musicians enter a new field and apply their creativity towards the VC’s focus. Would love to find out even more about Machine Shop.

Fort Minor “Welcome” on Conan

Last night, Mike Shinoda followed up the return release for his solo rap venture, Fort Minor, by performing the single for the first time live — on the Conan stage too. I’m a fan of this single/visual “Welcome” from yesterday if you missed it, and just in general, it’s great to hear new music from Mike whether it’s Fort Minor or Linkin Park. Here’s the performance below.

Fort Minor “Welcome”

One of the few rap returns that will have me drop what I’m doing, text whoever I know is a fan, and listen immediately is the return of Fort Minor.

Mike Shinoda surprises everyone with the comeback single “Welcome” under his rap solo name Fort Minor. I loved his lone album, The Rising Tied, so much in November ’05 that it was one of my most played albums through 2006. One of my high school soundtracks, for sure.

10 years later, we have “Welcome”, which he says he wanted to hear people right now and is not part of a new album. That’s fine, maybe an album will come sometime, maybe not, but I really vibe with Shinoda following his heart here, as expressed in this note that came with the free download of “Welcome” on fortminor.com.

The song itself is instantly engaging and Shinoda is always that and easy to understand. I feel a lot of us can relate to the lyrics and I especially rock with the chorus, both lyrically and sonically. This will continue to grow, especially as I see it with the visual below.

It’s like a real-life video game as Shinoda is pixelated throughout a pixelated L.A., seen through the lens of a 360 style video game camera. It’s well-executed and only adds to the depth of the song. Needless to say, this *Tibs Fav. is easily worth your eyes and ears below. And hopefully, more Fort Minor to come this summer.



Mike Shinoda talks Jay Z, Eminem, hip hop

Lots to enjoy in this great new sit-down with Mike Shinoda by Montreality. The 12 minute interview dives into Shinoda’s youth and personality before hitting a hip hop focus wherein Mike Shinoda reveals just how that Jay Z Collision Course album came about. This story alone makes it worth the viewing, but right after, Shinoda talks about wanting to work with Eminem, knowing about him before he was signed, and really being open to any collab if all the elements combine right.

The hip hop discussion continues with Shinoda giving his thoughts on the state of hip hop and what the genre has going for it in 2014. Finally, I love how people still ask him about Fort Minor because that was, from beginning to end, one of my favorite albums from 2006. Shinoda’s rap foray is still on the table as he says,

There’s a distinct possibility that there will be some Fort Minor music in the future.

Yes! Geeked for that distinct possibility.

Linkin Park “Final Masquerade”

With The Hunting Party impacting at the spark of summer, Linkin Park while preparing their tour, drops the new in-depth video for “Final Masquerade”. I already think this was one of the album’s strongest outputs (truthfully, I ended up not growing into much of the harder rock stuff than this) and now have a renewed appreciation for the song after the Mark Pellington-directed visuals.

Pellington drops a series of quick cuts, images, and different scenes throughout the five minutes that tell a disjointed story that’s predominantly dark, chaotic, and apocalyptic. However, there are also the positives that shine through at the other end of the spectrum with forgiveness being a theme, and when you’ll see it you’ll agree… Thank God for that angel. Enjoy!
