Run The Jewels kicks off SXSW 2015

While the music side of SXSW doesn’t officially start ’till tomorrow, the Spotify House kicked things off yesterday with performance artists The Bumbys and a high energy set from Run The Jewels.

Though the liquor flows like “Twisted Heat” one of the downsides of SXSW are long lines and the inevitable reaching of capacity at most venues. With that said – arriving early is a must and the best parties will have creative ways to keep you busy while waiting for your artist to take the stage. In addition to a an open bar, the Spotify House brought in The Bumbys who are known for their “fair and honest appraisals of your appearance” (Gill gave me a 9.3 – I can live with that) and Bose stepped up with a Disco room (think oversized portapotty filled with mirrors, disco balls, and a Bose stereo system instead of.. uh, all the usual unpleasant things that come along with a portapotty).

El-P and Killer Mike took the stage and killed it for an hour, and while the set was incredibly on point, a random attack on stage brought the show to a halt for a moment as Mike threw the “fuckboy” off stage (conveniently into me) which is when I grabbed him and pulled him off stage. When the ogre stepped towards me I obviously stepped back (I’m a 9.3 with Carmine 1’s – I’m a man but I ain’t about to go and throw all that out the window, ya feel me). Shit. Mike got the whole house chanting “fuckboy, fuckboy” as he left the house bleeding. Great show but absolutely terrible (if any) security.

Throwdown Throwback: A$AP Rocky Fight at SXSW 2012

Reviving #TBT or in my case Throwdown Throwback, I’m throwing it back with a clip featuring A$AP Rocky and his crew at SXSW 2012. Although this clip does include partial violence and violence is of course not always the answer, props are definitely deserved as they held their own against 300+ people. And yes, this clip and event is old as shit but come on now, I can’t channel that #TBT for nothing right?

This is one of my favorite videos roaming the YouTube sphere. Why? Cause shit is so ridiculous! From shit being stolen aka green rangs to A$AP Rocky using his “weak bitch” deductive skills to sort out the crowd, SXSW 2012 was too entertaining and had too many hood ass moments to not at least appreciate. But most of all this clip just shows how legit A$AP and his crew are in the music industry. How many people can say they got boys like that? You know, the ones that still keep it real and got your back? Help you rise to success? Help you promote your album? Man… let you “hold” a dollar when your ass was hungry at McDonalds? Not many. And with zero bullshit, A$AP Mob handled it like how they would with or without the fame…with their boys always on their side. And for that I give them props.

Saint Millie “Road to Glory: The Documentary” [Complete Series]

A few days ago RedEye Chicago and Chicago emcee Saint Millie released  Road To Glory: The Documentary that follows the Chicago rapper in a journey which highlights many of the struggles that upcoming artists face such as booking shows, making a name for themselves and the struggle of being one of thousands of artists all fighting for an opportunity to land a deal. This five part series could’ve not happened to to any other artists as Saint Millie has always carried himself as a caring, dedicated, and humble person. Saint Millie’s “Road To Glory” is a road less traveled, a journey with many difficulties that he acknowledges, but a road and journey which he believes is worth traveling for the rewards it has given him.

Few words from RedEye Chicago:

The Chicago music scene is crowded. It’s gritty. It’s completely unforgiving. But one rap artist from the westside of the city refuses to give up. When he’s gutpunched, he pops back up. Time and time again. Introducing Saint Millie, a 22-year-old Oak Park musician who believes he is living his “road to glory.” Watch the young artist on his journey to get paid for what he loves to do, jumping hurdles to get close to that reality. Overcoming small, quiet crowds is just the beginning. But Saint Millie is ready for whatever is thrown at him. He continues to be “the good in the situation.

Monday April 28th Saint Millie and RedEye Chicago will be screening the documentary series as well as provide performances at Schubas for FREE. Make sure you attend this event that will only happen ONCE IN A LIFETIME! [Info Below]

A collaboration between ILLoots and scoreMORE, the Illmore has continued to be the highest in demand ticket.  Tickets are unavailable for purchase.  The only options are to be invited or guest listed… there is one more option though, with work it is feaseable: sign up for their updates in advance, and rush to the designated location and time announced only minutes prior via email. Two more difficult options were available, either you, a female, email your pictures to badbaesonly@gmail.com to show off your hotness, or you, a guy, roll in with 5 atrractive ladies.

You don’t’ know who to expect at the Illmore house every year. I guess that’s the fun in it. I’m the type of person who loves to go out on Tuesday or Wednesday night and see where the night takes me, while Saturday nights I usually stay in. I’m not sure why, perhaps I hate the headache that hype creates for me. However, that’s the irony of it all. There is not hype for the artist, because you do not know who is coming, but you are excited to just be there. You get excited because you don’t know who you’re going to see and you don’t know what to expect and because of that… hundreds of people lined up within in minutes to try and win the wristband giveaway.

I get it now though. You know with the ILLRoots name the party is going to be good.  With a unique line-up from Aoki to YMCMB, you feel like you walk into a party with your friends hosted by your friends, and that feeling is so hard to find.  Also, those friends that you’re “partying” with just happened to have topped the Billboard charts, covered magazines, and/or are anticipated to break into the scene all under one roof.

In previous years, the parties were hosted in mansion but this year was in a youth center. Idling between feeling like I was at my homecoming (with better music of course) and a skating rink.  I have mixed feelings about the party being hosted in a much bigger venue when compared to previous shows going hard in a living room.  This year might have gotten too big, but the demand is still out of control.  I had a lot of fun this year, but please go back to the mansion. High school homecoming flashbacks were not good for me.

However, my mixed feelings were washed away when I was handed a red cup filled with vodka sprite.  Just like a private house party, the liquor flowed like a public college.

As rumors swirl that I just missed Aoki boating through the crowing, I turn around and see Aoki caking three people. That alone is better than any pie day the math geek in me has ever celebrated. The crowd explodes and the party continues till dawn.

There were a landslide more Bulls and Blackhawks hats than any other paraphernalia in the room.  I felt like I was partying at home. I get it. I get why the ILLMORE has become what it is. It’s a party for friends by some pretty awesome friends.

Line Up by Day:

Wednesday 3/13 : Big Sean, Virgil Abloh, Travis Scott

Thursday 3/14 :  Casey Veggies, G-Eazy, Dom Kennedy, Steve Aoki, Que, Trae the Truth, Dj Mr Rogers, OG Chase B, Mano, Brenmar, LOUDPVCK, Chuck Inglish, Future

Friday 3/15 : ASAP & YMCMB (ASAP Ferg, and Lil Wayne) Migos, Rob Banks, Denzel Curry, Dom Kennedy, Nicky Diamonds, Trinidad James, Trae, Lil Bib

Big Shouts out to IllRoots, ScoreMore, Dim Mak, Squad Up, OWSLA, TAYLOR GANG, ASAP WORLDWIDE, AND YMCMB for putting on a great show.
