Lolla Samsung Galaxy Experience & Owner’s Lounge ‘14 [Photo Recap]

Throughout the grounds of Samsung Galaxy Experience and the Samsung Galaxy Owner’s Lounge you’ll find an entire “Summer Camp” themed interactive environment. As you walk through a forest of trees just south of Buckingham Fountain you find yourself on Samsung’s campground (Galaxy Experience); tents labeled with different music genres allowed guests to tune into Milk Music, receive temporary metallic tattoos, lounge in hammocks and much more.

The Owner’s Lounge was an elevated experience, it featured just about everything the Galaxy Experience had and much more. A limited few were chosen to receive exclusive entry (rumor has it once you downloaded the Lolla app from your Samsung Galaxy phone they sent you an email with the invite, first come first serve). Entry included a meet & greet with Chromeo + intimate DJ set, loads of gift cards, lavish spread of camp-themed foods (the deconstructed smores in tiny mason jars were unbelievable!), fruity popsicle champaign infused beverages, skydeck viewing experience of the Samsung Galaxy Stage (featuring headliners Eminem, Outkast, and Kings of Leon), and last but most certainly not least…real bathrooms! This lounge experience was exactly how concerts should be viewed in my opinion; on comfy linen sofas with a cool drink in a mason jar on hand. Until next Lolla, thanks Samsung!

Krewella Lollapalooza Recap

Days 2 and 3 at Lolla this year had a heavy Chicago feel. Playing their part was Krewella, who headlined Day 2 of the Perry’s Stage and put on quite a phenomenal show featuring a 1 hour and 15 second mix of their hits spliced with hip hop like A$AP Rocky’s “Fuckin’ Problems” and Ludacris’ “How Low Can You Go?”. All of this was taken to another level as they incorporated the huge stage of multiple video screens with lights, smoke, and lasers that extended well out into the field where we were standing for these pics.

Look at Krewella puttin’ on for the Chi. Various times throughout their set, the sisters Jahan and Yasmine spoke from the heart, saluting the most beautiful city in the world with all of their family and close friends in attendance for their biggest performance to date in their hometown. It made their rendition of “Alive” at the end even that much more special (they wrote the song 3 miles away from Grant Park.)

The one official video clip of their set is below via Billboard, and stay tuned with the Krew as in-house videographer Miles Evert was also on hand documenting the performance. I was also able to find a very HQ audio rip of the entire 75 minutes and perfectly time a drop on Vine — both below the video. Fun to relive for me as I’ll instantly be able to recall the wind from the booming sound rushing at my face from such a distance and the vibration of the crowd jumping up and down on the ground.

Lastly, Yasmine and Jahan sat down with Billboard to talk about coming home for Lollapalooza and also shed some light on their hotly anticipated sophomore album. We’ll be tuned in as 2015 is shaping up to be even bigger for Krewella.

We keep writing songs, and songs we loved two months ago now will never make the album. We’re taking maybe 50 percent of the next four months off to really crank the second album out and focus on it, and try to finish birthing it.

Chance The Rapper Full Lollapalooza Set

Chance made some noise this weekend, to say the least, as he closed down Lollapalooza as the hip hop headliner on Day 3, performing while the likes of Skrillex and Kings of Leon were in other areas of Grant Park. He brought out R. Kelly, Vic Mensa, and rocked a crowd said to be over 60,000 people. Now, you can relive or watch for the 1st time, Chance’s 75-minute set with his Social Experiment band. The familiar names are playing: Peter CottonTale, Donnie Trumpet, Lili K, and Eryn Allen Kane. Watch the Chance The Rapper Full Lollapalooza Set above and enjoy!

Lolla The Sound of Your Stay Music Lounge ‘14 [Photo Recap]

Above: Lykke Li headlines Friday night. GWHH Video seen here.

BMF Media held their yearly 2 day The Sound of Your Stay Music Lounge at the Hard Rock Hotel where guests were invited to join in on activities throughout the day and into the wee hours. Free drinks + private artist performances = a one of a kind experience for any festival junkie. Red7Salon offered complimentary hair do’s (much needed when trying to freshen up for late night after parties or just after running around at Lolla) while Heineken Light and others offered up some snazzy refreshments.

Late night performances included Lykke Li, ASTR, Joywave, Delta Rae, Betty Who, and Smallpools. The first night we arrived just in time to check out ASTR, her dance moves…simply hypnotic. Lykke Li…unbelievably chill vibe, after a long day of chaos at the festival it was very refreshing to hear an acoustic, more intimate performance.

DJ sets for the weekend included Jeffrey Tonnesen, Joe Jonas, DJ Mom Jeans, Mia Moretti, Grouplove, and Captain Cuts. While at the lounge guests had a chance, thanks to Beats Music, to charge up their devices, mingle, and check out new music (for any amateur photographer and/or lover of selfies your phone was likely dying by mid day). Also readily available was the Picks photo booth presented by Fender, another cool way to remember the night.

Gambino Plays with Fire on Lolla Day 3

Originally posted 08.03. 11:55pm

Where do I even begin.  I’ve covered Gambino everytime he has been in Chicago these past two years. If that’s not Gambino Girl status, then I don’t what is.

I think one of the hardest things as an artist must be catering to a music festival crowd. Sound gets lost, there’s rain, exhausted kids, and people that didn’t buy tickets to go to your show in particular. Somehow, Gambino still manages to just kill it. He played and equal balance of old hits and new hits, and of course everything in between.

I had previously caught his show in SXSW (Austin) and in Chicago back in March and Gambino’s set kept the energy flowing throughout and had a completely different feel each time.  Gambino at the Woodies/SXSW was a little weird and more experimental. I think he was having fun messing with the crowd, playing his latest album Because The Internet, and wearing his trademark homeless person looking threads. Last March at the Vic in Chicago, he was intuitive, deep, and serious.

Revving up the beginning of the show, we hear the slow climax of “I. Crawl” as the rest of Lolla’s concert goings are pouring in after hiding from the rain .  Chicago loves our hip hop so the mastermind dedicated something extra special us – extra deep bass on his tracks.  Rapping his way through some of his toughest lyrics as his shorts could barely keep up with him.  (The waistband broke and were slowing working their way off).

Of course, there was also his actual physical set that was by far the most creative our team saw all weekend.  It was something along the lines of Salvador Dali graphics and towards the last third of his set, included some surprise pyrotechnics.  To top things off, he finished the show with a complete freestyle encore (heard in full below — with lyrics.)
